The Markets
Le Grand Marché (2 Rue Maréchal-Leclerc, open Monday through Saturday from 9am to 5.30pm) is the city's main arts-and-crafts market. Although not as colourful as the markets at Saint-Paul or that of Port-Louis in Mauritius, it offers all kinds of handicrafts, including the tablemats and cloths embroidered by the nuns at Cilaos, wooden articles, spices, baskets or vacaos-leaf mats, furniture made of tamarind or camphor wood, and many bibelots. The prices are fairly high, and bargaining is advised.
Le Petit Marché (Rue Maréchal-Leclerc, open Monday through Saturday from 8.30am to 6pm and on Sundays from 8am to noon), located near the train station, is mainly for fruit and vegetables. The open market (Wednesdays and Sundays from 8am to noon) at Chaudron, to the east of Saint-Denis, is probably the liveliest one in the northern part of the island. All of the fruits and vegetables grown in Réunion can be purchased there.

L’entrepôt
The best bookshop in town, if only for its friendly and helpful staff. It has a good selection of predominantly French-language books, as well as stationery and numerous newspapers and magazines in French and in English.
